Photoshop 6 or Higher: Create and Paint with Styles

Step 3: Add more to the style

Try adding some other elements to the new style. The two most often used styles are drop shadow and outer glow. Drop shadow helps to give a sense of depth and the outer glow will give a little punch to an object while hiding any minor problems with its layer transparency (artifacts from extraction, for example).

For this tutorial, I added a drop shadow, outer glow, inner glow, bevel and emboss with a texture.

Layer style, turn on more options.

My initially created custom shape of a briefcase is now sporting a completely different look because of the layer styling applied over the course of this tutorial.
