How to FTP with DreamweaverStep 5: Putting and Getting Files In Dreamweaver parlance, one can get or put files. Getting means downloading files off the website. Putting means uploading files to the website.
Now it's time to Put some files. The entire site, a single folder or even a single file can be put. To put the entire site at once, click on the "site" folder at the top of the files list. If you don't see your files list, hit F8 or go to "Window / Files" to bring it up. Under the "Local view" you'll see everything that is on your computer that can be put to your website. The layout of the files mirrors the layout on your website's server. NOTE: If you've FTPed to your website before from a different machine or from a different program, your Dreamweaver site might not have local copies of all your files. Just because they aren't on your local computer doesn't mean they have been deleted from your website. Once you've selected the items you want to put, either click on the blue arrow (the put icon) or do a right click (or control click on a Mac) and select Put from the drop down menu.
A dialogue box will appear asking if you want to "Include dependent files?" If you're not sure you've remembered to select everything, click "Yes" and Dreamweaver will include all assets to the upload. NOTE: As you build your site and start making regular updates, you'll probably want to click "No" as you'll probably have assets that you're not ready to put or don't need to be put over and over again. Once Dreamweaver is done putting the files, you should be able to see your updates on your website. Finally, to "Get" files from your server, click on the select the "Remove view" from the file drop down. Click on the connection icon (left most thing that looks like two plugs) and then on the refresh icon (blue curved arrow). You'll now be able to see the files on your website's server. Click on the ones you want to work on and click the green downward pointing arrow (or do a right click and select "get" from the menu). |
