Holly Evans is working on her science project. She has a theory that sending seedlings up into the stratosphere might affect how they grow. Shortly after she sends them floating away, giant vegetables end up raining down on different parts of the United States (like Artichokes in Alaska). The illustrations are Wiesner's classic surreal watercolors. The giant vegetables remind me of the old postcards advertising cities for their agriculture. My son and I both read June 29, 1999 and loved it. After we each read it, we discussed all the different vegetables and the cities. Five stars.
