Book Blogger Hop for September 30, 2011: 09/29/11

This week we're asked what our favorite banned or challenge book is. There's a link to a PDF of this year's ALA list. I'm going to admit that I'm rarely any good a picking a favorite. So rather than pick on from this year's list, I'll tell you which ones I've read.

• The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (review coming)
• Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America by Barbara Ehrenreich
• Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
• The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
• Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
• The Koran
• ttyl by Lauren Myracle
• The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
• The Bone series by Jeff Smith
• Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut

These are all excellent books. Please don't make me pick a favorite. Just go read them!

I have this map on my blog. It is crazy to see how much action there is in the USA. Hunger Games is a favorite for me too among many others. Here‚s Mine at FABR

The United States is big and heterogenous. Thankfully for the moment there aren't nationwide bannings of specific books but that has happened in the past (Ulysses, for example).

I love the map! I noticed quite a few Perks of Being a Wallflower challenges, so I just requested it from my local library. I read Annie on My Mind this week, and I'll be reading And Tango Makes Three tomorrow for Banned Book Week, but my all time favorite banned book has to be To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

I haven't read To Kill a Mockingbird yet. It wasn't required reading in high school or college and I haven't gotten around to it as an adult.

I've read quite a few of the books on the list myself. It's hard as heck to pick a favorite! I hadn't read Speak til the Scroggins man made his stink about it, then I had to just to see what the fuss was about. I really loved it and I've given away quite a few copies on my blog since then. Banning/Challenging books is just insane. Folks need to step back and stop trying to police what others read...and essentially what others think.

I like the map you put in your post. It's overwhelming and I can't imagine why those books are being banned in those places... I'm glad that I don't encounter it here... (I'm not even aware if there's some issues like this in the Philippines =P hehe

Heey there, I also had a hard time picking a favourite! I think it's absolutely ridiculous banning books, especially if you look at the list! I acutally really enjoyed the Koran, I don't understand why you would ban it!

I always find that when I end up reading the books on these lists I never understand what they heck they are talking about. The Hunger Games has violence but it's not gratuitous in any way. There is a message as with most of these books. To just boil it down to a dirty words etc is disgusting and says more about the people banning than the readers.

hate how quick people are to ban (or try to ban) books. I mean, have they read them? Do they think we can keep children in a bubble forever and ever??

Picking a favourite is hard! I figure as long as no one expects my favourites to be consistent, I can throw a dart and end up with different ones every day. :D

That map is very interesting! There are challenges all over the place - no wonder it's so important for all of us to speak up.

My fave from the current list is Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

I understand why people may not want to read a book, or think that anyone should read it — but, to actually try to impose that upon someone, that I do not understand!
