Book Blogger Hop for July 29, 2011: 07/29/11

This week we're asked to highlight a book we've recently received and are looking forward to reading. Since I don't enter many book contests and I'm not accepting many books for review, most of the books I do get I either buy or borrow from the library. Of those two options, about 80% of the books I read in any given week are from the library.

One book I got from the library on Wednesday and am already reading is Emily the Strange: The Lost Days by Rob Reger and Jessica Gruner. I heard about the book when it first came out but I didn't make an effort to get a copy. I saw the second book at the library and decided to start reading the series. I put the first book on hold.

It's a hybrid graphic novel / YA fiction. It is mostly prose but it has illustrations worked into nearly every page. The main character has come to on a park bench in Blackrock and is trying to piece together her identity. She's sort of working, mostly hanging out at El Dungeon, the towns coffee shop, museum and who knows what else.

The book reminds me a lot of Charles de Lint's The Mystery of Grace but written for a slightly younger audience. As with so many of the YAs I like, it's written in diary form.

The end papers spell out Emily Strange in repeating cat shapes.

Sounds like a really fun book! I've got a graphic novel with normal text pages waiting for me too. It's called The Surrogates - it doesn't look like an easy read at all! :-)

Thanks for stopping by my blog! That is a super cute kitty drawing. I've never heard of hybrid graphic novels + fiction, but I love the idea. Sounds a lot like Japanese light novels, which I love reading. I'll have to look for this and others like it...

They are very similar to the Japanese light novels. The ones I've read have been aimed at the middle grade and YA audience.

It's a great book. There are quite a few tween books with illustrations, although that seems to be less so with the YAs.
