Comments for Book Blogger Hop for July 29, 2011Book Blogger Hop for July 29, 2011: 07/29/11
One book I got from the library on Wednesday and am already reading is Emily the Strange: The Lost Days by Rob Reger and Jessica Gruner. I heard about the book when it first came out but I didn't make an effort to get a copy. I saw the second book at the library and decided to start reading the series. I put the first book on hold. It's a hybrid graphic novel / YA fiction. It is mostly prose but it has illustrations worked into nearly every page. The main character has come to on a park bench in Blackrock and is trying to piece together her identity. She's sort of working, mostly hanging out at El Dungeon, the towns coffee shop, museum and who knows what else. The book reminds me a lot of Charles de Lint's The Mystery of Grace but written for a slightly younger audience. As with so many of the YAs I like, it's written in diary form.

It's called The Surrogates - it doesn't look like an easy read at all! :-) Comment #2: Friday, July 29, 2011 at 15:51:03 Pussreboots The Surrogates sounds interesting. I look forward to your review. Comment #3: Friday, July, 29, 2011 at 16:36:32 This is so cool! I don't normally go for books with graphics, and I'm not normally a YA enthusiast, but I have to tell you that this book just might have to be my exception! Comment #4: Friday, July 29, 2011 at 15:58:03 Pussreboots Emily the Strange is a book I would have read as a teen, had it existed. Comment #5: Friday, July, 29, 2011 at 17:02:47 I keep hearing about the Emily the Strange books but haven't picked one up yet. The illustrations are cute! Comment #17: Friday, July, 29, 2011 at 20:22:11 Thanks for stopping by my blog! That is a super cute kitty drawing. I've never heard of hybrid graphic novels + fiction, but I love the idea. Sounds a lot like Japanese light novels, which I love reading. I'll have to look for this and others like it... Comment #18: Friday, July 29, 2011 at 17:46:02 Pussreboots They are very similar to the Japanese light novels. The ones I've read have been aimed at the middle grade and YA audience. Comment #20: Pussreboots Yeah... but it's a satisfying crazy. Comment #21: Friday, July, 29, 2011 at 20:26:18 I'm interested just because of the two pics. love creative things like the first one. Comment #23: Friday, July, 29, 2011 at 21:50:15 Thanks for hopping by my blog! That sounds like a cool book. I wish more YA had illustrations, or some fun visuals like that. Have a fun weekend! Comment #24: Friday, July 29, 2011 at 17:53:15 Pussreboots It's a great book. There are quite a few tween books with illustrations, although that seems to be less so with the YAs. Comment #25: Saturday, July, 30, 2011 at 07:19:00 I think at one point they made a doll of this character - I didn't realize there were books, and they sound interesting, I'll have to add them to the list! Comment #26: Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 22:31:11 Pussreboots I remember the dolls too. That might have been how I heard of the books.
