Comments for Book Blogger Hop for June 24, 2011Book Blogger Hop for June 24, 2011: 06/24/11
In July 1999 we had two weeks to move from South Pasadena to Daly City with no budget. That meant mostly moving our own stuff and hiring a mover for the larger furniture. Our own stuff mainly consisted (and still does) of books. Books take time to pack. Books make heavy boxes. Lots of books take lots of boxes. Our home was completely crowded with boxes. To make things worse we only had a Civic Hatchback. That meant we could only fit about twenty boxes in the back at one time. It meant dozens of all night drives from the old apartment to the new apartment (391 miles away). Ever since then I've been trying to cull our collection. The only problem is that now we have two children. They are as bookish as we are. So it's not just me and my husband collecting books any more. They are contributing to the family library. If we ever move again and it's not close by and we can't afford professional movers, I will sell or donate at least half of what we have. I just can't bear to make another move like the one we made 12 years ago. books | book blogger hop Comment #1: Friday, June, 24, 2011 at 13:48:16 I know exactly what you are talking about. I moved last year, luckily it was just a couple of miles away, but still I had to do many drives. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Have a great weekend! Comment #2: Friday, June 24, 2011 at 13:00:34 Pussreboots All of our other moves have been relatively close but that one was an insane move. I never want to repeat it. Comment #3: Friday, June, 24, 2011 at 14:28:11 Moving with tons of books is definitely NOT fun. I've done a lot of moving on my own with boxes of books. Ick! Comment #4: Friday, June 24, 2011 at 13:01:42 Pussreboots And then to make things worse... after a full day (or night) driving, we'd have to carry the heavy boxes up six flights of stairs. Once there we'd sleep on the floor in sleeping bags. It was exhausting. Comment #5: Friday, June, 24, 2011 at 14:29:32 Hey Sarah! The map puts into perspective- those are long drives for book relocation :D Comment #6: Friday, June 24, 2011 at 13:02:42 Pussreboots Thank you! I'm glad you like my blog. I had to put the map just to show how long the drive was. We did that every other day for two weeks. We put thousands of miles on our car in that move. Comment #7: Friday, June, 24, 2011 at 14:52:23 Wow! That would be a hard move. My husband and I have donated lots of our books because we've had to move several times and the boxes of books are the worst part about it. Most of what we donated were textbooks, though, because I can't bare to part with my other books. Comment #8: Friday, June 24, 2011 at 13:02:42 Pussreboots I have some textbooks I should donate. Comment #9: Friday, June, 24, 2011 at 16:11:15 When did I first realize I loved reading? I wish I could prove a pre-natal predilection towards books but my memories don't stretch back quite that far. The earliest memories I can recall involved books. First having them read to me then reading them on my own the minute I had the ability. Books have been a major part of my life ever since. My passion for the written word knowing no bounds, I started writing books on top of reading them about ten years ago. Want to know what my favorite childhood book was? Hop on over to my blog and find out. Comment #10: Friday, June 24, 2011 at 22:49:01 Pussreboots I read outloud when I was pregnant. So if you mom did that, then maybe you do have a pre-natal love of books. Comment #11: Friday, June, 24, 2011 at 17:09:01 We were hoping to sell our flat and to tidy up I boxed up loads of stuff, and then realised just how many books I have. The kindle is a godsend! Comment #12: Friday, June 24, 2011 at 22:51:10 Pussreboots I don't have a Kindle and don't plan on getting one (or any other e-reader). I'm not actually all that attached to my books to want to replace the ones I donate or sell. Comment #13: Friday, June, 24, 2011 at 17:59:35 Wow. I know when I move it is going to be crazy packing up my books too. I think I would have made a bargain with UPS that a home cooked meal for discounted shipping to new UPS drop off point. (and packed and shipped those books)
Comment #14: Friday, June 24, 2011 at 22:54:15 Pussreboots Friends and family told us to ship our books book rate via the post office. But then we'd have been stuck having to pick up all those boxes at the post office and we'd still have to lug them up all those stairs. Comment #15: Friday, June, 24, 2011 at 22:15:56 Christy @TheReaderBee www.thereaderbee.com That's a pretty long move, especially when you had to drive that far back and forth! :) Comment #16: Friday, June 24, 2011 at 22:56:21 Pussreboots It was an insane move but we were young and we didn't have children. We did though have our cat but she only made the drive once. Comment #17: Friday, June, 24, 2011 at 23:29:29 parting with books can be heartbreaking! i feel for you! ps old follower, but a lurker. i love your blog :) Comment #18: Friday, June 24, 2011 at 22:59:32 Pussreboots Thanks! I'm glad you like my blog. Parting books for me isn't that hard. I could probably pare my collection down to 100 but convincing the rest of my family to do the same would be the hard part. Comment #19: Saturday, June, 25, 2011 at 01:20:49 Marla @ Starting the Next Chapter Thanks for the visit today. That would definitely be a good indication of your bookishness. I had a similar experience when my family and I moved to South Korea for a few months. I had a suitcase full of books. It was my carry on. It probably wasn't the most practical move, but I couldn't leave my absolute favorites behind. Comment #20: Friday, June 24, 2011 at 23:01:12 Pussreboots I had a similar suitcase of books when I moved away for college. Comment #21: Saturday, June, 25, 2011 at 01:29:48 Cathy @ Abnormally Paranormal Reviews Ouch! Driving that far to move all your books? Good thing ebooks are taking off. Think how much easier it is to move a Kindle than tons of boxes of books! Although, I still love good ol' physical books... Comment #22: Friday, June 24, 2011 at 23:03:12 Pussreboots I don't own an ereader. I don't buy ebooks. I'm not so attached to my current collection to want to replace them with ebook versions when the time comes to cull my collection. Comment #23: Saturday, June, 25, 2011 at 03:06:52 Moving is a great excuse for culling books but it would be so difficult to choose what to keep and what to donate. Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by. Comment #24: Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 22:05:30 Pussreboots Believe it or not, I'm not that attached to most of my books. They've sort of ended up in my care but I could just as easily give them up. Comment #25: Saturday, June, 25, 2011 at 12:26:33 Thanks for hopping by my blog. That's a really long move! Especially to have to do all by yourself. Have a great weekend :) Comment #26: Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 22:06:22 Pussreboots I don't recommend trying it! I certainly never want to move like that again. Comment #27: Saturday, June, 25, 2011 at 12:58:35 Stopping by via the Book Blogger Hop. I'm a new follower.
Comment #28: Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 22:08:25 Pussreboots Welcome to my blog! Comment #29: Saturday, June, 25, 2011 at 20:00:40 Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm a new follower of yours now. You are like me. My step-dad has always complained every time I've moved about all the heavy boxes of books I have. Even with my Nook e-reader now, I still will always have books. Comment #30: Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 22:11:00 Pussreboots My book collection didn't really get out of hand until after I got married. I don't have an ereader (beyond my computer) and don't plan on getting one. Comment #31: Sunday, June, 26, 2011 at 10:57:20 ♥ Sarah @ I'm Loving Books Yeah, I'd say that'd be a wake up call to how important books are! Great story! Thanks for stopping by my blogger hop as well. Sorry it took so long to reply! Comment #32: Sunday, June 26, 2011 at 22:01:05 Pussreboots Thank you. I'm glad you liked my post. Comment #33: Wednesday, June, 29, 2011 at 10:18:12 As a follow up let me ask you did you read your way out of your book problem? :) Comment #34: Friday, July 1, 2011 at 21:37:01 Pussreboots Yes, actually I did! Thanks for asking. © 1997-2012 Sarah Sammis
