Book Blogger Hop for June 24, 2011: 06/24/11

When did I first realize how important reading was in my life?

In July 1999 we had two weeks to move from South Pasadena to Daly City with no budget. That meant mostly moving our own stuff and hiring a mover for the larger furniture. Our own stuff mainly consisted (and still does) of books.

Books take time to pack. Books make heavy boxes. Lots of books take lots of boxes. Our home was completely crowded with boxes. To make things worse we only had a Civic Hatchback. That meant we could only fit about twenty boxes in the back at one time. It meant dozens of all night drives from the old apartment to the new apartment (391 miles away).

Ever since then I've been trying to cull our collection. The only problem is that now we have two children. They are as bookish as we are. So it's not just me and my husband collecting books any more. They are contributing to the family library.

If we ever move again and it's not close by and we can't afford professional movers, I will sell or donate at least half of what we have. I just can't bear to make another move like the one we made 12 years ago.

All of our other moves have been relatively close but that one was an insane move. I never want to repeat it.

Moving with tons of books is definitely NOT fun. I've done a lot of moving on my own with boxes of books. Ick!

And then to make things worse... after a full day (or night) driving, we'd have to carry the heavy boxes up six flights of stairs. Once there we'd sleep on the floor in sleeping bags. It was exhausting.

Thank you! I'm glad you like my blog. I had to put the map just to show how long the drive was. We did that every other day for two weeks. We put thousands of miles on our car in that move.

Wow! That would be a hard move. My husband and I have donated lots of our books because we've had to move several times and the boxes of books are the worst part about it. Most of what we donated were textbooks, though, because I can't bare to part with my other books.

When did I first realize I loved reading? I wish I could prove a pre-natal predilection towards books but my memories don't stretch back quite that far.

The earliest memories I can recall involved books. First having them read to me then reading them on my own the minute I had the ability.

Books have been a major part of my life ever since. My passion for the written word knowing no bounds, I started writing books on top of reading them about ten years ago.

I read outloud when I was pregnant. So if you mom did that, then maybe you do have a pre-natal love of books.

We were hoping to sell our flat and to tidy up I boxed up loads of stuff, and then realised just how many books I have. The kindle is a godsend!

I don't have a Kindle and don't plan on getting one (or any other e-reader). I'm not actually all that attached to my books to want to replace the ones I donate or sell.

Wow. I know when I move it is going to be crazy packing up my books too. I think I would have made a bargain with UPS that a home cooked meal for discounted shipping to new UPS drop off point. (and packed and shipped those books)

Friends and family told us to ship our books book rate via the post office. But then we'd have been stuck having to pick up all those boxes at the post office and we'd still have to lug them up all those stairs.

It was an insane move but we were young and we didn't have children. We did though have our cat but she only made the drive once.

Thanks! I'm glad you like my blog. Parting books for me isn't that hard. I could probably pare my collection down to 100 but convincing the rest of my family to do the same would be the hard part.

Thanks for the visit today. That would definitely be a good indication of your bookishness. I had a similar experience when my family and I moved to South Korea for a few months. I had a suitcase full of books. It was my carry on. It probably wasn't the most practical move, but I couldn't leave my absolute favorites behind.

Ouch! Driving that far to move all your books? Good thing ebooks are taking off. Think how much easier it is to move a Kindle than tons of boxes of books!

I don't own an ereader. I don't buy ebooks. I'm not so attached to my current collection to want to replace them with ebook versions when the time comes to cull my collection.

My book collection didn't really get out of hand until after I got married. I don't have an ereader (beyond my computer) and don't plan on getting one.
