What Are You Reading: May 23, 2011: 05/22/11

I finished ten books this week which actually surprises me because I hardly did any reading during my usual fun reading time. I finished one manga over coffee as well as one tween mystery, The Case of the Missing Marquess by Nancy Springer.

Although Ranma 1/2 is a manga I read it at home while I was recovering from a cold. It's a much older manga and the translation was mirrored so that the book will read from left to right. Ranma 1/2 was one of my earliest introductions to anime but I've never bothered to read the manga. Turns out I like the manga better than the anime.

My daughter of course still loves story time before bed so my list includes my reading with her: Babyberry Pie, Miss Lina's Ballerinas and Fancy Nancy: Poet Extraordinaire! Our favorite by far was Miss Lina's Ballerinas. We're both fans of the Madeline series and Miss Lina's Ballerinas is written and illustrated in the style of the books.

This week I hope to finish two volumes of xxxHolic, Tips on Having a Gay (ex) Boyfriend and Theodosia and the Last Pharaoh.

My girls love the Fancy Nancy books. I haven't seen the Miss Lina book; I'll have to look into it.
Did you like The Night Fairy? It's on my TBR pile.

I liked The Night Fairy and gave it a 4 out of 5. The first Enola Holmes mystery I loved and gave it a perfect 5.

Nice achievement! Unfortunately I can't read Japanese (although i'm learning) so I can't read manga the way it is originally written but I much prefer my translations to still be in the Japanese tradition of reading from back to front, right to left, it's just one of those quirks of mine I guess, not rational reason!

The vast majority of the manga I read are translations in the traditional Japanese layout. I mentioned Ramna's reversal just to point out how much older it is than the bulk of what I read. It took a while for publishers to catch on to the fact that the readers could handle reading the book right to left in translation.

I read about 150 pages a day but mostly in the form of picture books and manga (also low on word count).

That was the first Fancy Nancy I read with my daughter. Prior to that it's been my son who has liked them. He likes all the vocabulary that's introduced in the books.

Bollywood Babes is part of a trilogy. I've read two of the three and they're very good. I've seen the Fancy Nancy Doll in your photos, although I didn't recognize her.

I loved Shark vs. Train! I just bought a few copies for our school library, and hte principal read it to the lower grades at lunch. What a fun book for kids!

Shark vs Train was one of thos surprise books for me. I wasn't expecting to like it even though it's been winning awards. But it ended up being delightful and silly and a great way to teach score keeping.

Keeping track of the different plots is no different than watching a bunch of TV series in a week and keeping thrack of their plots and characters. Most of the books I read were short. I read the same amount as if I'd read two full length fantasy novels.

I don't crank out books. I just read short books. Not many bloggers review picture books. If you look at the total page number I finished the equivalent of two full length fantasy novels.

In all your reading of picture books, do you have any recommendations for good (and preferably humorous) POC books? I especially want to find some with Spanish characters = although I would love to find books with all variety of country and characters. Love to hear any recommendations you have of books you enjoyed.
