Book Blogger HopBook Blogger Hop for December 17, 2010: 12/17/10

The grades are in for my papers. Both were very good! I'm just now waiting for the final class grades to be posted. In the meantime I'm back to freelance writing to make a little extra money to help with bills.

Today is my daughter's winter concert. She's been practicing for weeks. She has Winter Wonderland completely memorized. Grandpa Charlie's up in town and will be seeing the concert with us.

Next week my son is off from school so I will be trying to write while keeping him entertained. Then it's the holidays and I'll be busy with my family.

This week's question is about plot versus characters. I've spent the last few hours mulling the question in terms of the books I'm currently reading. While I want to say that both are important but thinking about the books I've enjoyed, I realize that I don't mind a completely nonsensical plot as long as the book has memorable characters.

I'm with you ... I can overlook a poor plot if their characters are extremely well developed.

I don't even need well developed characters, just memorable ones. They can be completely over the top and silly. I love odd ball characters.

Thanks for stopping by my site. I agree characters are the most important part of novels for me, but plot is really important too. I don't know if I could get into a story that I didn't believe major aspects of the lot.

I have loved books with completely unbelievable plots because the characters were so unspeakably awesome. I tend to love nonsensical plots.

Thanks. It's going to be the first quiet weekend in ages and the first one where I don't have anything due!

Hi, thanks for stopping by ^^

For me plot saves the day. Recently I read a novel with not so interesting character, but the plot is great and it makes me keep reading till the end.

Pussreboots

A good plot but dull character would result at me screaming at the character for the entire book.

This might be the best Book Blogger Hop question I've seen to date.

So what's the answer? Plot! Hop over to my blog and let me tell you how a good plot rescued bad characters from bad book oblivion.

I would hope for both too but if I were forced to pick one over the other, I would pick characters over plot.

Good Evening! Thanks for the visit! I'm with you on the characters! The plot can be almost non-existent if the characters are entertaining.

Comment #24: Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 12:01:22

Pussreboots

Exactly! I thought about all my recent favorite books and realized that I remembered the characters before I remembered the plot.

Thanks for stopping by. :)

I keep seeing different peoples post and agree with them, but I honestly think it's the characters I like the best. :)

Have a good weekend!

Lexie C.

I was discussing this with my dad while we watched Resident Evil actually (after having written my post of course). The only genre I really care about the plot moreso is in Fantasy (and all its branches--urban, epic, alternate history). Everything else I need to enjoy the characters and world at the same time.

Thanks for stopping by! and sorry for the first comment I hit 'enter' accidentally XD

Comment #30: Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 12:11:03

Pussreboots

Don't worry about the stray comment. Everything gets moderated before posting. I thought about you wanting a good plot for fantasy and I thought about my own favorite fantasies and I'm sticking with prefering characters over plots. I think that's why I don't like quest stories. Those are so typically about getting from point A to point B and not about the characters on the quest.

Alex

I feel the same way as you. I think good characters and came a book enjoyable even if the plot isn't super original, or well done.

:)

Hope you have a great weekend!

yay for good grades :)
And yes tough question this week, in the end I do want both to be good

Comment #36: Monday, December 20, 2010 at 20:18:51

Pussreboots

In an ideal book both would be strong. If though one has to be stronger than the other, I am more forgiving of a poor plot than I am of poorly realized characters.

Yep, for me, excellent characters can redeem a very simple plot.

Comment #42: Monday, December 20, 2010 at 20:30:02

I will gladly take a nonsensical plot with memorable characters over an ornate plot with characters that aren't well formed.
