Comments for Pretties

Pretties: 09/20/10

cover art (Link goes to Powells)Pretties by Scott Westerfeld begins after Tally's had her operation. Her mind has been wiped of her days outside of society. She though has this nagging feeling that something has changed. When she's shown the letter she wrote to herself she's shocked at how much she's lost. At the same time, though, she's not sure she wants to go back.

Just as Uglies showed what life was like in the Ugly town, Pretties spends a lot of time in the Pretty town. Unfortunately perfect people who are high on stuff and are suffering from a medically induced stupidity just aren't as interesting as scared teens who haven't been altered yet.

Pretties is a pause in the action. It ends just as things are hotting up. Tally is once again interesting to the higher ups in her society. She might be useful to them and they might be useful to her.

I will probably read the third installment, Specials but I'm not feeling as compelled to rush out and read it as I was after I finished Uglies.

I've read The Stepford Wives and while it and Pretties both deconstruct beauty I don't see Westerfeld's book as a young adult retelling of Levin's. The Stepford Wives is basically a Gothic horror wrapped up in a modern day science fiction book. Pretties though is part of a larger story arc. Uglies and Pretties remind me most of Metropolis, just expanded out.

I like your review...It made regreat not buying uglies. I saw it in book fair for less than 2.5dollars, but I know nothing about the book so I didn't buy it

If you see Uglies again, it's worth getting a copy.
