Book Blogger Hop for September 24, 2010: 09/24/10
I'm completely buried in research, writing and group projects for graduate school. The two largest projects I'm working on are term papers. One is on how GIS (map databases) can aid (or hinder) the response in a disaster. The other one is about the role of blogging in libraries. I will begin reading in greater detail on that subject next week.
Meanwhile my son has finished his first month of third grade. He's very happy, much happier than he was at the start of second grade. He's also started reading well beyond his age level where as last year he was behind in his reading skills. He has discovered Roger Zelazny and is working through Night of the Lonesome October. He also wants to start the Harry Potter series.
Harriet meanwhile continues to love to sing and to draw. She can hear a song once or twice and have the lyrics memorized. Her artwork has take leaps forward since her birthday. I guess something clicked in her brain and she's starting to observe better how things look and is making good efforts to draw from life.
The Question of the Week:
How do I write reviews.
I read much faster than I write. I don't always have time at night to write a full review for posting. So I write my reviews when I can, usually on the weekends or one a night if I can after the children go to bed. Then I save the review for posting in the future.
I have two lists relating to my reviews. The first is the list of reviews I need to write. That list has approximately 150 titles on it. The other list has the titles of reviews I've written. Each night I picked one at random from that list to post to my blog. Currently the list of reviews to post stands at 43.

I used to have a complex calendar that planned out my reviews for months in advance. That level of organization took all the fun out of blogging.

I'm visiting from the blog hop and am already a follower. Good luck with your grad research. I look back upon mine with fond remembrances, although the work was difficult, as that was where I re-developed my love for writing and research. I found the more research I did, the more I was buried in it, the more I loved it. I am actually considering going back for my PhD (when the kids are older). Where you find time to fit in a family, blog, and do you research is beyond me though.
Have a great weekend!
Stephanie

My day goes like this: kids to school, breakfast at my local coffee shop where I sit and do my homework for the week, home for chores or a trip to the library, freelance writing, reading for research, pick up oldest from school, more homework while he's doing his, pick up youngest from school, dinner, kids to bed, blogging, bedtime. Weekends are when I do most of my reading for fun.
Hafsah
Thanks for stopping by and following my blog. I'm following you back.

You're welcome. Thank you for the return follow.

Thanks for stopping by mine!
I think it's so cool that your son has discovered Zelazny. I loved him when I was in my SF phase.
Pussreboots
I didn't discover Zelazny until I wan undergrad. I'm thrilled to see him reading him now.
Shera (Book Whispers)
I know what you mean! It's always hard to stop reading and find time to write reviews.
Pussreboots
I don't always have my computer with me to write reviews but I always have a book with me.
Vasilly
S, I think you are so amazing! You write a ton of reviews plus you're a mother and a student! I hope you share more info with us later on about your projects. They sound really interesting. Have a great weekend.
Pussreboots
I don't feel amazing. Maybe overwhelmed at times but I am falling into a new routine. I will be reviewing all the books I read for my research since that's just about the only thing I'm reading right now. I'm also posting my free form thoughts on my projects on Facebook.
michelle
I like your idea of lists-you at least always have something to write about. It is difficult to write posts with little ones in our lives. Sometimes by the time I get my daughter to bed I'm too sleepy to write well. Great to read your answer!
Pussreboots
I don't force myself to write a review on nights when I'm too tired or too busy to write. Some nights I'll write two. It all works out.
Melissa
Wow...you have so many reviews ready to post. Does that mean you mostly review backlist titles? How do you decide which of the reviews that you already have written that you're going to post?
Pussreboots
Three quarters of what I review comes from my local library. The remaining quarter is divided evenly between review books and my personal collection. I use a random number generator to decide which review to post next unless I have a specific need to publish on a given date.

I'm glad to hear your son is happier at school this year! That can make such a difference.
I am feeling so much better about my backlog of reviews. Thanks for posting that! Eventually we'll get through them, right? I refuse to let it feel like a chore. :-)
Pussreboots
Things worked out OK last year but it started out rough. There just wasn't good communication between the teacher and the parents at first. I stopped worrying about getting all my reviews done in a timely manner about two years ago. Been much happier for it.
Angela
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
Sounds like your son is going to start devouring books soon! I'm always happy when I hear about kids that love to read.
That's a good method for reviewing. Right now I'm still trying to keep on top of mine, but it is time consuming! LOL
Have a great weekend :)
Pussreboots
He's starting to devour books now but he's growing in a home full of books. His dad reads, I read and we read to him and his sister.
Unless you're being paid for maintaining your blog don't worry about falling behind with your reviews. Let it be fun, not a chore.
Bree
Thanks for stopping by my blog! Hope you have a great weekend :)
Pussreboots
Thank you. Same to you.
Heather: Acting Balanced Mom
I've gotten ahead on my reviews too... not because I'm usually that organized, but I'm having a baby due November 8th and wanted to be prepared :) I'm probably 3 weeks ahead now, and planning to have 10 more reviews done in the next few weeks
Pussreboots
Congratulations. Blogging was really difficult when my youngest was an infant. Good luck!
Jo
Sounds you have a lot on your plate right now! I completely agree with what you say about reading faster than you write I try to make a few notes on a notecard when I'm reading, but sometimes, I just get too caught in the book to slow down and write.
Have a great weekend! and good luck with those assignments!
Pussreboots
I don't take notes unless it's for research. The closest I'll come to note taking for pleasure reading is making notes at GoodReads.
Chazz
Hi, thanks for stopping by my blog! If you get the chance to pop back and follow that would be great. I am now following you :)
Pussreboots
Thank you for the follow.
Elizabeth
Just hopping by....wow...how can you wait to write the review...I would forget. :) First-time visitor.
Stop by my blog if you get a chance for the answer to this week's questions. It was my question that was chosen. Pretty neat.
I also have a lot of reviews you may want to check out.
Happy Hopping, Everyone....hop on over to my blog to see MY answer to MY question. :)
Pussreboots
You're right, I do sometimes forget details. If I've completely forgotten a book then I'll move it off my to be reviewed list. If I've only forgotten a few things I'll mention what I've forgotten in my review. I can usually get a good idea if I've forgotten something by reading other reviews before I write mine.
Congratulations on having your question chosen.
Tiger Holland
Returning the visit! Argh, computer ate my first comment..basically, I think it's wonderful that your memory is that good--I can barely keep track of one book at a time. :-)
Pussreboots
Reading the book's description and maybe a review or two are usually enough to get my mind in gear to write the review. Sometimes I don't remember what the book is about. When that happens I usually decide not to review it.
Danna
I review after I write too:) Cool blog:)
Happy reading!
Pussreboots
Thank you. Happy reading to you as well.
Pussreboots
You're welcome.
An Abundance of Books
I also write reviews set publication for a future date. This gives me weekends where I don't write, but also a chance to have double check with a fresh/clear mind.
Pussreboots
I do most of my review writing on weekends because my weeknights are too busy.
Amy Butler
Returning the Hop! I'm impressed that you have so many books on your list to review.
Your graduate program sounds very interesting!
Pussreboots
It is interesting and a lot of work.
Lu
Hopping over to say have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by!
Now a new follower :)

Pussreboots
Thank you for the follow. Happy reading.
Bailey
Wow, I'm impressed at the speed of your reading! I generally read a book, write a review, and post it right away. Thank you for visiting The Window Seat Reader. Have a good weekend!
Pussreboots
I used to do it that way but I was finding myself getting frustrated at those times when I couldn't blog right away. Or I'd finish a book right before bed and just not have the energy to write a post then. It just made blogging seem like too much of a chore.
Pussreboots
I don't consider myself behind. I'm keeping up with my promised one review a day.
Mareena
Wow, that's a lot of reviews. Happy weekend!
Pussreboots
Who knows if I'll review them all. I might change my mind on some of them.
Alison
Hopping through. Hope you're having a great weekend. I agree that it's easier make time to read than to write.
Pussreboots
The books go with me everywhere but the computer doesn't. So I'm constantly reading.
Laurel-Rain Snow
Thanks for hopping my way...If I didn't write reviews right afterwards, I would never get them done! And I'd probably forget what I wanted to say!
Pussreboots
I figure I'm getting one posted a day and anything over that is gravy.
The Bookish Snob
Happy Hop! I'm a big note taker when I read which helps me alot when I go to write my review afterwards. It sometimes takes me a day or two to write the review and with my memory as bad as it's been, it's proven vital. You do whatever works right? Have a great weekend :)
Thanks for visting
Pussreboots
I think I spend about half an hour, an hour tops on each review. The ones I write are short. For the freelance articles I write and get paid for, I spend more time. But this site is just for fun.
Amber M
Thanks for dropping by my hop! That's a lot of reviews that need to be done. I like to sit on books for a few days and then whip up a review. Have an awesome weekend!
Pussreboots
I also like to sit on my reviews before writing them.
Melody
I've started writing and saving reviews/posts too... sometimes I'm just not able to find the time to write! Thanks for visiting my blog & have a great weekend.
Pussreboots
I like having the reviews on hand so I don't have to rush to write them when I want to make a post.
Pussreboots
I am. Next semester will be even crazier.
Victoria
Thanks for stopping over at my blog!
Very interesting method. Not sure I could be that organized.
Pussreboots
It's actually less organized that I used to be.
Dee
I'm impressed that you have lists! And that you have 43 reviews ready to post :)
I'm at 1 review a week, just because I'm finding it more interesting to write about publishing in general...and e-readers!
I'm also Launching an international Giveaway today! e-Volving Books
Pussreboots
Good luck with your contest. I started out slow with my review posting but realized I could post one a day at the rate I was reading and writing.
WonderBunny
I am not a graduate student but I did just start my senior year for my undergrad and I seemed to have saved all my major related courses til the very end...and its a lot of work just staying top of all my homework and required reading. Plus field trips! I am a geology major so I have five field trips before the end of October, three of them are within three weeks of each other. I just first the first of the three I'm exhausted because it is 12 hours on your feet or close to that taking notes, looking at rocks, hiking. I can't wait to for it to be over. So while I can't understand all the graduate stuff, I can understand busy school stuff! :)
Thank you for stopping by my blog for the hop! Have a great week.
Pussreboots
You're probably busier than I am. Next semseter though will be nuts for me. I have friends who are geoligists whom I met when were in college. I remember how exhausting their classes and field work were.
Super
Hopping by to say hello...I'm impressed with your organization!
Pussreboots
Thank you. It's actually a lot less organization that what I used to have. This version has more flexibility built in to the system.
Zee
Thanks so much for dropping by on the Hop. I think you've got a great system going. I'll have to try that and see if it can keep me on a tighter schedule. Have a great weekend.
Pussreboots
My system isn't for scheduling. It's actually a response to when I had every day of the month scheduled and it was driving me nuts and stressing me out.
Susan Mann
Love your site, hopping over to say hi. You are so orgnaised.
Pussreboots
Not really. I couldn't tell you what I plan to read or post next week if you asked.
Julie
I can see you read really fast! I wish I could read that fast. My Dad can read a book in one day. I can read about a book a week. But if I'm really into it I can read over a couple of days. I usually try to write the review within a day or two of finishing the book.
Pussreboots
I am reading faster than usual because I only have so long to get through the books I've requested through interlibrary loan for my research.
