Book Blogger Hop for August 13, 2010: 08/13/10
The freelance writing is continuing. With my son home and my first MLIS course going full steam I've been averaging about one and half articles a day.
Birthday season is in full swing too. Last month my niece had her first birthday. Next up is my son. Then it's my sister in law and me. Then comes my daughter.
My son goes back to school in about 10 days. I'm not sure if he's ready or not. Since he had a busy first half of summer I'm pretty much letting him lounge around and play video games. After a year off from reading
The Magic Tree House series, he's suddenly interested in them again. He's checked out a huge stack of them from the library.
The Question of the Week:
How many books do I have on my TBR shelf?
Let's put it this way. I have so many books on my to be read shelf that back in 2007 I created my own database to keep track of them. I can track when I receive a book and when I get rid of a book. Typically I don't keep a book after I read it unless it's one I want to re-read.
Right now my database tells me I have 1,117 books that are "to be read." If I were to stop taking books for review from authors and if I were to ignore my library, I could get through that amount in about three years. But the truth is, I won't do that. So who knows how long it will take!
The nice thing though about not having money for books right now (except of course my text books) is that I am slowly burning through my to be read pile.

Pussreboots
Thank you for stopping by and for following my blog. I will be making the rounds shortly.
Pussreboots
I should probably do another culling of my shelves. My taste has evolved somewhat from when I got some of them.
Booksploring
Thanks for stopping by my blog in last week's Hop! You have an impressive number of books on your tbr pile :-) at least you'll never run out of reading material!
Pussreboots
It would be really nice to run out of reading material but to do that I need to focus more of my attention on my TBR pile!
Raeni Miller
Hi there-I am one of your classmates in LIBR 203, and I just had to post a note to tell you I love your TBR database! I've been cramming as much fiction as possible into my diet before it becomes all textbooks. Good luck Raeni
Pussreboots
Thank you for stopping by! I'm also binging on as much fiction as I can. I know from previous college experience I probably won't completely give up reading for fun but the text books and research will have to come first.
Reading Angel
We really are kindred TBR spirits! If I would quit over running myself with review books I would be able to burn through my TBR as well...but I don't see it happening...
Pussreboots
My review pile is thankfully only a miniscule fraction of the total TBR.
Jael
1,117!!! You will be reading until the end of time!!
Pussreboots
Not really. If I were to only read from my TBR shelf it would take about two and half years.
Alissa
Thanks for stopping by my blog. :]
1,117 books is quite an undertaking. I've visited other blogs and thought a mere 500 was ambitious!
Pussreboots
I'm no longer able to buy huge stacks of books so I will work my way through them.
Natalie
Thanks for stopping by Mindful Musings!
Wow! And I thought mine was bad! But you're right...when you don't have extra money for "fun" books, it is a lot easier to burn through your TBR pile!
Have a great weekend!
Pussreboots
Exactly. I have a great mixture of books just waiting to read. I suspect that once college takes off I won't have the time for library books. So I'll switch to reading more from my TBR pile since I can read them more slowly.
Sarah
That is a LOT of books to be read. And here I thought I had a lot! I used to keep track but lost all the date I haven't split my "library" database into to be read recently. I don't think I have more than 100 though.
Pussreboots
I realized that I needed something searchable and something that could show me how quickly I was reading books versus bringing new ones home. That's why I decided to build a database. It took me an entire year to put in the initial data. I did it at night after the kids went to bed.
SapphireReads
OMG...1,117 books, how long have you been collecting them? I will know where to come to for good book suggestions
Pussreboots
I got the book bug bad when I was a teen. So my collection reflects twenty five years of acquisitions. Most of my books are purchases from charity shops, used book stores or friends of the library sales.
Paranormal Haven
Stopping in from this weeks Blogger Hop. Geez over 1000 books?? You definitely beat me. I hope you have a great weekend!

I suspect that I'm on the high end with my massive TBR pile.

Howdy from the hop!
Wow! That is a lot of books! The database sounds cool. I am slowly trying to make one for myself.
Happy reading,
Missie

Pussreboots
The database is a huge time saver once it's built.

Greetings! I have at least 60 books on my TBR pile, and the pile keeps growing. I love to read historical fiction.
Pussreboots
I read a mixture of things. Thank you for stopping by.
Bella
Hey there! Thanks for stopping by Obsessed!
Have a lovely weekend xx
Pussreboots
You're welcome. Thank you for the return visit.
Alison
Hopping through! Have a great weekend...hope you get through a few of your 1,000+ books!
Pussreboots
I will. I go in cycles between reading library books and books from my own shelves.
Pixie
Just returning the hop. Thanks for stopping by PageTurners.

You're welcome.

Thanks for visting my blog today.
Your post on your TBR books is so funny; I actually laughed out loud. The bit about creating a databse for them - too funny!
I'm now a new follower of your blog!! :)
Pussreboots
Funny but useful. I'm happy you enjoyed the post. Thank you for following my blog.
Bailey
Hello! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I am now a follower! =)
Pussreboots
You're welcome. Thank you for following.
nymfaux
WOW!!! I am SUPER-IMPRESSED by your organizational skills!!!
The more I think about this question, the more I'm glad I have such a big list who would ever want to finish their list??? I would be so sad to have nothing to read!!!
BTW I LOVE your blog name!!!! It makes me smile :)
Pussreboots
Thank you. I like my houseful of books. It's nice to be able to pick something at random to read.
I'm glad you like my blog's name. I like yours too.
julie
Awesome!! It's incredible how they accumulate, isn't it?? Good luck working through all of them!
Thanks for dropping by my blog! Have a wonderful weekend!
Pussreboots
My to be read list accounts for about twenty-five years of collecting.
The Book Wurrm
Wowzers, that's a lot of books. My tastes evolve so I don't know if I'm going to be reading all the books on my shelves or not but you know, you can never have too much read (unless you're in school and then you most certainly can). :D Thanks for dropping by.
Pussreboots
My tastes evolve too. Most of the books I got for pennies on the dollar so if I don't like the book, it's no great loss. I can just give it to someone who will like it or donate it to my local friends of the library bookshop.
Lisa (A Life Bound By Books)
WOW! I don't feel so bad now lol. I know I don't have THAT many.. but the number I have on my TBR shelf is still pretty high up there. I hope you enjoy them all :) Have a great weekend!
Pussreboots
Thank you. I hope I do too.
jennifer
I am absolutely impressed. And jealous. Very, very jealous. ;)
Pussreboots
Don't be jealous! Just think of what a pain it is to pack up and move! And dust!
Melody
Hi there, thanks for stopping by my blog...I'm off to browse your archives. :)
Pussreboots
Thank you. If you come across broken links in the archives, shoot me an email. I had to move somethings around and I know I've missed fixing some links here and there.
Sarah
Good Lord that's a lot of books!! Good Luck to you, but I can tell that you are like me, and as soon as one book leaves the TBR pile, another one enters!
Pussreboots
You're absolutely right. It doesn't take very long for me to pick up the next book.
Chelle
You're a true librarian with your own database! I love it! That's quite a few tomes you've got there. It must be a beautiful sight!
Pussreboots
The funniest thing about it is, I created the database years before I even thought about going back to school for the MLIS. It's more of a chaotic site than a beautiful one.
Kailia Sage
Hi! Thanks for visiting my blog! I am already a follower of your blog! I have close to 200 books on my shelf!
Come and say hi!
Pussreboots
You're welcome.
Erika

Thanks for hopping by my blog! I really appreciate you looking around and following me.
I can't believe you have so many books to read! My shelf is always around 50 and it looks daunting to me. Good luck hacking it down though you seem like a pretty fast reader.
I'm you're newest follower.
Have an awesome weekend!
Pussreboots
Neither can I. It's grown since the last time I counted the pile. Thank you for following me.
toni
Oh my goodness.
So. Many Books.
*head explodes*
Haha, best of luck with them. You are an inspiration to us all :p
Pussreboots
Sorry about exploding your head.
Elle
Hey! Thanks for stopping by at my blog. I like the idea of having a book database. Three years! Wow. That's a long time. The TBR list is endless though. I have 9 books in my immediate TBR. :D
Have a lovely day!
Pussreboots
In my immediate TBR I have more like 20 books.
Lindsey
LOL thats a big pile. Mine would be bigger if I included all the books I want to read but I only included the books that are actually in my house and have yet to be read. If it was all the books I want it would still be less then yours haha
Pussreboots
I didn't include any wishlist books.
cheryl
Wow that's alot of books! I think if I were to slow done my Amazon purchases I would get through some of my preexisting pile but most of my tbr is really a wish list so it's an excuse to buy more books! I applaud you for going to school and raising a child it's not always easy and keep up the good work!
Pussreboots
I haven't made an Amazon purchase for fun in a couple years. Good luck with your TBR.
Noe and Suz
Hi! Thanks for stopping by our blog. We are returning the love and are new followers and I love your blog.
Just the fact that you have to have a database, cracks me up. That is a very long list of to reads‚. :)
Pussreboots
I wanted a way to track if I was reading the books faster or slower than I was getting them.
The1stdaughter (Danielle)
Oh my! That is one heck of a TBR pile, but I always knew you had to have a pretty large one considering the amount of reviews you post. Wow! Just amazing! Thanks for stopping by my site again for the hop! :o)
Pussreboots
Unfortunately for my TBR pile most of my recent reviews have been library books.
Kelsey
Great TBR pile..LOL...I did have database at one time and I was over 1,000+ books and then this summer I had a HUGE garage sale and went through all my books...will have to start another database I think!! Hope you had a great weekend!
Pussreboots
It would be nice to be the point that I no longer needed the database.
Beverly @ The Wormhole
Hey - just hoppin' by! I started the hop on Friday, but had to leave, just now getting back to it. Hope you had a great weekend! Stop by The Wormhole and say hi!
Pussreboots
Here it is time for a new hop and I'm only just now getting back to you. It's been a busy week. Have a great weekend!
Casey (The Bookish Type)
Wowzas! That is a LOT of books! You're making me feel better about my TBR mountain =) Thanks for stopping by my site!
Pussreboots
It is a lot of books and it just got a little bigger because my text books have all arrived.
