Book Blogger HopBook Blogger Hop for August 13, 2010: 08/13/10

The freelance writing is continuing. With my son home and my first MLIS course going full steam I've been averaging about one and half articles a day.

Birthday season is in full swing too. Last month my niece had her first birthday. Next up is my son. Then it's my sister in law and me. Then comes my daughter.

My son goes back to school in about 10 days. I'm not sure if he's ready or not. Since he had a busy first half of summer I'm pretty much letting him lounge around and play video games. After a year off from reading The Magic Tree House series, he's suddenly interested in them again. He's checked out a huge stack of them from the library.

The Question of the Week:

How many books do I have on my TBR shelf?

Let's put it this way. I have so many books on my to be read shelf that back in 2007 I created my own database to keep track of them. I can track when I receive a book and when I get rid of a book. Typically I don't keep a book after I read it unless it's one I want to re-read.

Right now my database tells me I have 1,117 books that are "to be read." If I were to stop taking books for review from authors and if I were to ignore my library, I could get through that amount in about three years. But the truth is, I won't do that. So who knows how long it will take!

The nice thing though about not having money for books right now (except of course my text books) is that I am slowly burning through my to be read pile.

I don't know if I can burn through my tbr pile!

I should probably do another culling of my shelves. My taste has evolved somewhat from when I got some of them.

Thanks for stopping by my blog in last week's Hop! You have an impressive number of books on your tbr pile :-) at least you'll never run out of reading material!

Comment #6: Friday, August 13, 2010 at 09:08:19

Pussreboots

It would be really nice to run out of reading material but to do that I need to focus more of my attention on my TBR pile!

Hi there-I am one of your classmates in LIBR 203, and I just had to post a note to tell you I love your TBR database! I've been cramming as much fiction as possible into my diet before it becomes all textbooks. Good luck — Raeni

Comment #8: Friday, August 13, 2010 at 09:10:12

Pussreboots

Thank you for stopping by! I'm also binging on as much fiction as I can. I know from previous college experience I probably won't completely give up reading for fun but the text books and research will have to come first.

We really are kindred TBR spirits! If I would quit over running myself with review books I would be able to burn through my TBR as well...but I don't see it happening...

Comment #10: Friday, August 13, 2010 at 10:17:30

Pussreboots

My review pile is thankfully only a miniscule fraction of the total TBR.

Comment #11: Friday, August, 13, 2010 at 13:57:06

Jael

1,117!!! You will be reading until the end of time!!

Comment #12: Friday, August 13, 2010 at 15:06:35

Pussreboots

Not really. If I were to only read from my TBR shelf it would take about two and half years.

Comment #13: Friday, August, 13, 2010 at 14:13:10

Alissa

Thanks for stopping by my blog. :]

1,117 books is quite an undertaking. I've visited other blogs and thought a mere 500 was ambitious!

Comment #14: Friday, August 13, 2010 at 15:08:41

Pussreboots

I'm no longer able to buy huge stacks of books so I will work my way through them.

Thanks for stopping by Mindful Musings!

Wow! And I thought mine was bad! But you're right...when you don't have extra money for "fun" books, it is a lot easier to burn through your TBR pile!

Have a great weekend!

Comment #16: Friday, August 13, 2010 at 15:10:44

Pussreboots

Exactly. I have a great mixture of books just waiting to read. I suspect that once college takes off I won't have the time for library books. So I'll switch to reading more from my TBR pile since I can read them more slowly.

Comment #17: Friday, August, 13, 2010 at 14:53:08

Sarah

That is a LOT of books to be read. And here I thought I had a lot! I used to keep track but lost all the date — I haven't split my "library" database into to be read recently. I don't think I have more than 100 though.

Comment #18: Friday, August 13, 2010 at 15:13:45

Pussreboots

I realized that I needed something searchable and something that could show me how quickly I was reading books versus bringing new ones home. That's why I decided to build a database. It took me an entire year to put in the initial data. I did it at night after the kids went to bed.

OMG...1,117 books, how long have you been collecting them? I will know where to come to for good book suggestions

Comment #20: Friday, August 13, 2010 at 15:15:50

Pussreboots

I got the book bug bad when I was a teen. So my collection reflects twenty five years of acquisitions. Most of my books are purchases from charity shops, used book stores or friends of the library sales.

The more I think about this question, the more I'm glad I have such a big list — who would ever want to finish their list??? I would be so sad to have nothing to read!!!

Wowzers, that's a lot of books. My tastes evolve so I don't know if I'm going to be reading all the books on my shelves or not but you know, you can never have too much read (unless you're in school and then you most certainly can). :D Thanks for dropping by.

Comment #42: Friday, August 13, 2010 at 22:31:00

Pussreboots

My tastes evolve too. Most of the books I got for pennies on the dollar so if I don't like the book, it's no great loss. I can just give it to someone who will like it or donate it to my local friends of the library bookshop.

You're a true librarian with your own database! I love it! That's quite a few tomes you've got there. It must be a beautiful sight!

Comment #52: Friday, August 13, 2010 at 22:43:30

The funniest thing about it is, I created the database years before I even thought about going back to school for the MLIS. It's more of a chaotic site than a beautiful one.

Hey! Thanks for stopping by at my blog. I like the idea of having a book database. Three years! Wow. That's a long time. The TBR list is endless though. I have 9 books in my immediate TBR. :D

Have a lovely day!

LOL thats a big pile. Mine would be bigger if I included all the books I want to read but I only included the books that are actually in my house and have yet to be read. If it was all the books I want it would still be less then yours haha

Wow that's alot of books! I think if I were to slow done my Amazon purchases I would get through some of my preexisting pile but most of my tbr is really a wish list so it's an excuse to buy more books! I applaud you for going to school and raising a child it's not always easy and keep up the good work!
