Book Beginnings on Friday: The Mysterious Benedict Society: 08/26/10
Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading. If you like, share with everyone why you do, or do not, like the sentence.
Thank you to Rose City Reader for giving me the idea for this meme. On Rose City Reader you will find 'Opening Sentences of the Day' so please have a look at this wonderful blog for further opportunities to share opening sentences.
I am reading The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
GoodReads Description:
Dozens of children respond to this peculiar ad in the newspaper and are then put through a series of mind-bending tests, which readers take along with them. Only four children-two boys and two girls-succeed. Their challenge: to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and inventive children could complete. To accomplish it they will have to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule is that there are no rules. But what they'll find in the hidden underground tunnels of the school is more than your average school supplies. So, if you're gifted, creative, or happen to know Morse Code, they could probably use your help.
The Opening:
In a city called Stonetown, near a port called Stonetown Harbor, a boy named Reynie Muldoon was prepairing to take a test.
My Thoghts:
I was hooked by the first sentence. That doesn't typically happen for me. I'm now halfway through and I hope to finish the book either tonight or tomorow sometime.

Oooh. Now I want to know what kind of test!
The Bradbury book... this is his non-SF from 1985 (published 20 years after his last full-length work Something Wicked This Way Comes).

1985 was about the time I started reading Bradbury but I started with his classics, like Fahrenheit 451. I'm fairly certain I haven't read the book you posted about but I've studied his works in class. Maybe I read the line in class. Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for the book.

It is a good one - immediately makes you want to know what test and why.
Happy reading!
Pussreboots
Yes. And then it just gets more and more mysterious from there. It's great fun.

I had not heard of this book until seeing this post! I did not read the description of the book until after I read the first sentence. My first thought was what test? I love when an author can pull you in with his/her first sentence!
I have added this book to my "to read" list!
My post can be found here

It's a fun book. I hope to finish it today because I really want to know how it turns out.

I started this one a long while back and couldn't keep interested in it. I will give it another shot....

I'm enjoying the book but I do have admit to needing to re-readin certain spots. Sometimes the action jumps from scene to scene without any warning. Other times a flashback gets tossed in that takes me by surprise.

It really sounds good!
Have a blast hopping to/following new blogs or beginning great books!

It is very good. It's not perfect but still a fun read.

Hi Puss,
It's Friday night in Australia. And for those of us who are middle aged bibliobloggers, Friday night means... hopping around the web.
So, here I am yet again.
I've just added The Mysterious Benedict Society to my TBR list. You've got me with the first line, too.
Pussreboots
I'm in California so by the time I post it's usually Friday in most of the world.
I hope you enjoy The Mysterious Benedict Society. I certainly am.
Laurel-Rain Snow

Pleased to hear that you were hooked, that opener makes it sound like it will be a good read
Pussreboots
It has a fun read start to finish. And to make it even better, there was a twist at the end that I didn't see coming.
