Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading. If you like, share with everyone why you do, or do not, like the sentence.
Thank you to Rose City Reader for giving me the idea for this meme. On Rose City Reader you will find 'Opening Sentences of the Day' so please have a look at this wonderful blog for further opportunities to share opening sentences.
I am reading Mary Modern by Camille Deangelis
Product Description:
Lucy Morrigan, a young genetic researcher, lives with her boyfriend, Gray, and an odd collection of tenants in her crumbling family mansion. Surrounded by four generations of clothes, photographs, furniture, and other remnants of past lives, Lucy and Gray’s home life is strangely out of touch with the modern world—except for Lucy’s high-tech lab in the basement.
Frustrated by her unsuccessful attempts to attain motherhood or tenure, Lucy takes drastic measures to achieve both. Using a bloodstained scrap of an apron found in the attic, Lucy successfully clones her grandmother Mary. But rather than conjuring a new baby, Lucy brings to life a twenty-two-year-old Mary, who is confused and disoriented when she finds herself trapped in the strangest sort of déjà vu: alive in a home that is no longer her own, surrounded by reminders of a life she has already lived but doesn’t remember.
A remarkable debut novel, Mary Modern turns an unflinching eye on the joyous, heartbreaking, and utterly unexpected consequences of human desire.
The Opener:
"The house has no name, though it is quite grand enough to warrant one."

I like the summary. Sounds very interesting. A twist on Frankenstein maybe? :-)

You hit the nail on the head. It's Frankenstein done with cloning and stemcells.

It's really good. I want to finish it soon. I just have a library book to get through first.

Although not ground breaking stuff, I like this type of classic period opening sentence, it shows the story is bigger than the individual characters - it has a certain timeless quality. I have to say, that is certainly a plot line I have not heard of before - very interested to hear how you find this one - love the title!

The opening suits the mood of the novel. This old ramshackle house is as much a character as the people who live in it are.

Interesting beginning :)
Have a great weekend!

Thank you. I'm working a little bit on Saturday but on Sunday we're going to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. That will be fun.

Great opening sentence! The summary sounds like an interesting story. I would hate to be Mary. Happy reading!

Thank you! I'll get the book reviewed as soon as I can. I agree with you. I wouldn't want to be Mary either.

I'm not much into memes, but this one got me to thinking. Thanks for the heads up and hope to see you at "Book Beginnings on Fridays" this coming week.
While this opening wouldn't have grabbed my attention, I do have this on my wishlist.

I like this meme. It's fun to see how the books that we're reading start. Also it's not as popular a meme so it's not a huge time commitment.
