If that isn't the perfect LOL Cat to sum up Aurora's likely involvement in the Great Lock In. If only help hadn't arrived from Earth (or as they call it, "the home office"). When I first started with these characters (in The Captain's Daughter, now the sequel to Devil to Pay) these four people from Earth had been here for a decade and were firmly established in their rolls. They were also at the time all male, though I had included some female crew members (whom I promptly killed in a tragic accident). As they are some of my oldest characters (in terms of how long I've been working with them) they are perhaps the most prone to cliches which I am trying to iron out of their character sheets.

The surviving members of the UNIGA Security Force:

Keith Sanders:

Place of birth: North Bay, Ontario, Canada.

Keith's father was a mechanic and was raised with the expectation that he'd take over the family business. He joined UNIGA seeing it as his easiest ticket out of town. He came to Albion fully expecting to complete the mission as ordered but is taken in by Aurora's version of events.

Lance Knifechief:

Place of birth: The Arizona side of the Navajo Nation

Lance is the crew physician and because of his husband's death, language expert. He joined UNIGA to be with Luis, a man he met at the clinic. He also wanted to experience more than what was available to him. He has become more of a traditionalist now that he's light years from Earth. Navajo rituals are complicated and require more than one person to perform correctly so he is forced to make do by simplifying or by training others.

Lance got his name because his mother was fond of Arthurian legends. He also has a traditional name: Tilo. His last name isn't his clan name. I knew someone else a long time ago with the last name. I haven't bothered to figure out which clan he belongs to.

Edwina "Ed" Nabokov:

Place of birth: San Francisco, California

Ed's adopted parents lived in one of the few remaining Victorian homes (keep in mind the story takes place in the far future). The house has probably been rebuilt from so many repairs over the years that very little if anything of the original structure exists. But it still looks the same. Anyway, they decided their daughter needed an old name befitting of an old house.

Ed was originally male but there wasn't nothing about the character that required a man. She ends up being a far more interesting person as a woman. In my head she's a mixture of Pippi Longstocking and Radical Edward but all grown up. In honor of Radical Edward, I kept the name Ed when I switched the character's gender.

Charles Bacchus

Place of birth: Perth, Western Australia

Charles grew up on a sheep ranch. He was actually happy living and working with the sheep. Curiosity got the best of him when the UNIGA recruiters stopped by.
