Comments for Booking Through Thursday: Fool

Booking Through ThursdayBooking Through Thursday: Fool: 04/01/10

Since it's April Fool's Day, I toyed with different ideas of questions for today.

  • Who's your favorite "fool" of a character, and why?
  • What authors have fooled you? By a trick plot twist? By making you think their book was any good when it wasn't?
  • What covers have fooled you into reading books you hated even though the covers were wonderful?
  • What's the best April Fool's Day trick you've ever seen/heard about/done?

My favorite fool of a character is Georgia Nicholson, created by Louise Rennison. She's not really foolish, just young. Her goofy diary entries crack me up. They're wonderful parodies of older chicklit like Brigit Jones's Diary. The series works because Georgia starts off at almost 14 and is almost 16 at the end of the series. She does mature over the course of the books, as evidenced by the group of younger girls who come to her for advice in the last couple of books. I've read every single book in the series and reviewed a few on my blog:

I don't feel like I've ever been fooled by an author. My reactions to books tend to be contrary to popular opinion so I've come to expect to not like a book especially when it's on the best seller list. The exceptions to that rule are Dan Brown and Rick Riordan. Dan Brown's books read like Saturday matinee adventure films. They are cheesy and improbably and full of holes but I love them. The Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan have turned out to be as addicting to me as Harry Potter was to most everyone else.

But if I don't like a book, I don't feel like I've been fooled into reading it. That sort of reaction seems like a waste of energy to me. If I don't like a book, I have a quick grumble about it, write my review and move on.

Cover art... yes I'm a sucker for a pretty cover. Evolution's Shore by Ian MacDonald has a gorgeous cover. I didn't love the book but I still love the cover. Although I have no desire to read the Twilight series, I think the covers are great.

As far as April Fools jokes go, I've never played one and can't think of any. I do though like how the comic strips will swap artists for the day.

Bridget Jones isn't my cup of tea but I love the parodies of it.
