What My Children Are Reading: Week 06: 07/02/09

What my kids are reading

Here it is Thursday again and time my favorite meme. We're on week six of "What Are My Children Reading" and this week's reading is in part a repeat of last week's reading.

Sean:
Sean and I are working our way through Hoot. I've read the book and seen the movie and have been eagerly waiting for him to be old enough for both. He is enjoying the book as much as I did. We've read two chapters so far and have stopped to discuss the characters, make predictions about the plot and talk about what it must be like to move to a new place and start a new school.

With Ian, he is also working his way through What is the Name of This Book? by Raymond M. Smullyan. I'm not sure how far along he is in the book but I do know he loves the riddles in it.

Harriet:
Harriet is reading one of her books and two library books. Her book is That's Not My Dinosaur... by Fiona Watt and illustrated by Rachel Wells. It's an Usborne "touchy-feely" book and she likes all the different textures. From the library we are reading If You Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond and The Cat Barked? by Lydia Monks which is illustrated in a style similar to the Pinkalicious series of books.

Those Usborne touchy-feely books are great and have appeal well beyond their target audience. When the Usborne rep comes round here I'm always keen to try out all their new touchy-feely books. In fact, I would recommend any line of Usborne board books; they are slightly oversized, have oodles of kid appeal, and well made (although the books that come with the CD's take a beating in our board book area.)

The Usborne book was a gift.

The Cat Barked? looks like something we need to read. I'm definitely adding that to our list!

The Cat Barked makes both of my kids howl with laughter.

Thanks for introducing a few books that were completely unknown to me. What is the Name of This Book sounds very intriguing and might make a good present for a 10 year old daughter of my friends. In my country I went to a special school that specialized in math and logic, so I am sure a lot of puzzles will look awfully familiar to me :) My daughter loves Laura Numeroff books and especially Moose book, as she calls it. We just brought home If you give a pig a pancake, but I haven't read it to her yet. Happy reading!

I asked my husband about What is the Name of this Book? and he says he first read it when he was 8 or 9. Our son is 7, so your daughter would be a good age for it. We have If You Give a Pig a Pancake and both my children love it.
