Comments for 9 for 2009

9 for 20099 for 2009: 12/30/08

I'm joining one more reading challenge. This one is called 9 for 2009. Like the What's in a Name Challenge, the idea is to read a different book from a different category (in this case 9).

The challenge runs for a year (December 27, 2008 - December 27, 2009). There will be quarterly prizes and there is a blog to post links to your reviews. In that regard, the challenge resembles the Decades Challenge.

My tentative list includes:

  1. Long: Ulysses by James Joyce
  2. Free: The Valley of the Giants by Peter B. Kyne (received through Craigslist)
  3. Dusty: Earthworms in Europe by William Hazlett Upson
  4. Used: South-Sea Idyls by Charles Warren Stoddard (bought used)
  5. Letter: The Future I edited by Isaac Asimov, Martin H. Greenberg, Joseph D. Olander
  6. Strange: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
  7. Distance: Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne
  8. Alive or Not: Isle of the Dead by Roger Zelazny
  9. Cover: The Stainless Steel Rat Gets Drafted by Harry Harrison (it's one of my favorite covers)

My actual list:

  1. Long: Ulysses by James Joyce; Read the Review.
  2. Free: The Valley of the Giants by Peter B. Kyne (received through Craigslist); Read the review.
  3. Dusty: Sorcerers of Majipoor by Robert Silverberg. Owned since September 13, 2004. Read the Review.
  4. Used: South-Sea Idyls by Charles Warren Stoddard (bought used); Read the review.
  5. Letter: R is for Richochet by Sue Grafton; Read the Review.
  6. Strange: Of Dreams and Realities by Frank L. Johnson (poetry); Read the Review.
  7. Distance: Eighth Day of the Week by Marek Hlasko (5871 miles); Read the Review
  8. Alive or Not: Emiko Superstar by Mariko Tamaki (winner of a 2008-9 Cybil); Read the Review.
  9. Cover: The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield; Read the Review;
