"Wow. What an interesting book and thanks for the contest!

I'm going to recall a memory of Oregon. Back in 1999 I was moving from Alaska to Colorado and drove/ferried the whole way. The best memories were from the coast highway 101. I remember being enchanted by Devil's Punchbowl State Park, the flickering lighthouses, the sand dunes, and a small town named Florence."

Steph says:
"Oregon. When I hear it, I think of my American History class. And then I realize we didn't really learn too much about it. Except a few dates here and there about certain important things. Which I pretty much forget now. This is why I've decided to take a stab at another U.S. history course in university. But all that aside, the first thing that does come to mind is a certain computer game I used to play when I was younger. A really old school one called 'Oregon Trail'. Ohhhh yeahhh. It was really lame, but I LOVED it. It was also a hard to get game for some reason and when I did eventually get to play it, I was enthralled. For some reason, when I was a kid I absolutely loved to pretend that my backyard = some sort of farming land / little house on the prairie-esque type of life. So Oregon trail was a step up. I was able to make all sorts of decisions as my family moved across the Oregon trail. We died along the way quite a few times and I can't seem to remember if I actually ever made it anywhere in the end, but it was good fun."

In the 1960's the Bureau of Land Management issued a recreation map renaming the meadow, "Naughty Girl Meadows" But in 1971 the Oregon Geographic Names Board took strong objection to the change and brought their argument before federal arbiters. After ten years the old name was restored in 1981.

Janice says:
"I grew up in Seattle, but both of my parents were born and raised in Oregon. Almost every year at Thanksgiving and Christmas (and sometimes during the week before Easter, too) we visited my grandparents and relatives in Portland and Turner. We also visited relatives in St Helens and Beaverton. Turner was a very small town and one of my grandfathers and my uncles owned the supermarket there when I was young. At night I would sit on my grandparents front porch and watch the train go by. One of my uncles had a small farm in Turner. He raised Shetland ponies and my Aunt raised blueberries. In the summer in addition to visiting relatives, we usually spent a week on the Oregon coast camping, digging clams, going for walks on the beach and picking up agates and shells, and sitting on the beach at night and watching the beautiful sunsets. I no longer live on the west coast and I sure do miss Washington and Oregon. "
