"My husband is the leader of the green patrol. Some of the things listed he's done for years, but we're always on the look out for the next step. We use cfl bulbs in almost all of our fixtures. We compost and recycle. We use reusable bags. We try to get our food shopping in after church or when we are in town, so we don't make extra trips. The water thermostat is turned down, we have a programmable thermostat with the temperatures set higher in the summer and lower in the winter (put on a sweatshirt, it's winter - he says). The biggest savings for us came when we redid the siding and windows. We had to save for years for that one and it paid off big time."

"My family is doing our very best to be as green as possible. I would love to have this book as a reference though, as I'm sure there is usually something else we can do.
We recycle everything that can be recycled; we unplug all appliances at night time; we water our plants with cooled down water from cooking veggies; we turn off the water when we brush our teeth; we only have five min showers; we always carry and use cloth grocery bags and mesh produce bags; we walk whenever we don't have to drive; we have bought all new energy efficient lightbulbs, and we always use cold water to do laundry!!"

Kathy Mullins says:
"This prize is a fine one indeed. Taking care of our environment is so important and I am glad that people are talking about this very important subject.
As for me when I take walks I like to pick up the litter I find on the roadside. I oftentimes find unwanted soda cans or bottles that I can redeem for money--a win win situation if there ever is one ;-)!! I even go so far as to pluck cans and bottles out of trash cans to keep them from going to the landfill. Doing this is a winner for both me and our planet. Kudos also to the folks in the city who do the same thing--they do a very important service for our environment.
This post is dedicated in loving memory of my Dad, who was a legislator before he died. He worked on various environmental initiatives, and Dad taught me from a young age to care about the environment. This is for you, Dad!!
Thank you for offering such a wonderful prize that helps both the reader and our planet!!
Love
Kathy

Suse says:
"My hubby grows our vegggies -- besides saving on the cost of transport to the market, he calls the garden his "therapy" -- good in more ways than one. :-)
I shop at the local farmer's market too.
Our electric company has been giving away the CFLs and offering rebates on the purchase of the bulbs. We have a high rated energy-star washer that uses about 1/3 the amount of water most washers use and do all wash in cool water.
And keep the heat turned very low (around 62) and wear layers if needed. (Which we often do need here in the Upper Midwest).

Anyway, these days, we recycle, reuse as much as possible, use only non-toxic cleaning products, like Seventh Generation or just baking soda. We eat organic food as much as possible and drive as little as possible. We're mindful of these sorts of things at all times, really."
