Puss Reboots: Digital Art: Themes: Urban

Big cities and urban landscapes play a role in my art.

Sunny Los Angeles
Sunny Los Angeles
I took a color photograph I had snapped at MacCarther Park and sepia toned it. Ten I added some noise and the old fashioned photograph album corners. Of course the skyline in Los Angeles didn't take this form until the mid 1980s/early 1990s but it was still a fun exercise.

Gargoyle 2
Gargoyle 2
Back in 2001 I was a product tester for the 3DCommune and this was one of those test images. I like the colors of it but otherwise it's not one of my favorites.

Crabby Joe's
Crabby Joe's
I put this together in Photoshop from some photos I had on hand. I don't recall what font I used for the text.

Ahead Stop
Ahead Stop
I drew this piece in Photoshop.

June 2001
Skyline in the Fog
Skyline in the Fog
I revisted my earlier Skyline project and added in the stop lights that marked the corner of Skyline and Hickey.

June 2002
Pacific Coast Highway
Pacific Coast Highway
Another foggy road scene inspired by life in California.

June 2002
The View
The View
I drew this window view in Illustrator. It is a view of Miami.

April 2003
The Suburbs on Monday
The Suburbs on Monday
I did this for the Bryce Yahoo Group challenge to render something from up high or far away. I added a few details later with Photoshop.

March 2004
Brownstone Courtyard
Brownstone Courtyard
Here is a Bryce version of the courtyard. I never finishd this piece.

May 2004
Westwood California
Westwood California
I was practicing with Bryce
trees again.

May 2004
Jackson Street
Jackson Street
There is a fence at a brown site on Jackson street in Hayward just like this Bryce render.

September 2004
Morning Commute
Morning Commute
I drew this in Photoshop to capture my memory of a particularly beautiful cloud formation as I drove west across the San Mateo Bridge.

October 2004
The Alley Light
The Alley Light
Inspired by the light near where I park my car at work.

December 2004

The Bridge at Sunset
The Bridge at Sunset
I've done another representation of the San Mateo Bridge, this time in Bryce. All the models are boolean operations and all the textures are DTE creations (including the
striped line).

My Rainy Day Commute
My Rainy Day Commute
It's not a great drawing but I drew it to get over the frustration of a very long and wet drive home.

The City
The City
Planet Detroit is a little joke in response to a friend who teased me for naming all my recent planets for British cities.

Caution
Caution
Drawn with Photoshop. The orange reflector isn't quite as round as I would have liked but I'm pleased with everything else.

Bell Telephone
Bell Telephone
A drawing of an old icon on a city street corner somewhere.

Deliveries
Deliveries
Drawn with Photoshop.

Old Desk
Old Desk
Drew this today in Photoshop. It's typical of so many of the places I worked at in San Francisco -- those converted older buildings now serving as dot-com company head quarters.

Traffic Light
Traffic Light
Drawn with Photoshop. I like the contrast of the orange and yellows against the dark blues.

Freeway Butterflies
Freeway Butterflies
After a recent rain the air was alive with butterflies. The butterflies in this piece are the "leaves" of a Bryce tree that has its branches and trunk set to 100% transparency.

Fenced In
Fenced In
The city is created from multiple versions of a skyscraper model by David Cole. The foreground house, park, roads and lamp are mine. As I was putting together the city block I thought of the story of the Little House by Virginia Lee Burton.

May 22-24, 2006

San Carlos Alley
San Carlos Alley
I drew this in Photoshop. It is one of the buildings across the alley from where I work.

June 1, 2006

City Hall
City Hall
This building by David Cole reminds me a bit of the typical mid 20th century city hall. The plane, central building and surrounding skyscrapers are David's. The remaining models
are mine.

Fire Escape
Fire Escape
I drew this piece in Photoshop. I used the pen tool to define my areas and layer my colors. As with most of my Photoshop drawings, I did most of the coloration with gradients.

Cooling Off
Cooling
Here is my first Photoshop drawing for the month of July. I like the juxtaposition of the bright oranges against the drak grays of the
brick background.

Midnight
Midnight
It's another glowing light source. I seem to be stuck on drawing or rendering ligh bulbs right now.
