Puss Reboots: Digital Art: Themes: Drinks

Drinks have been a constant theme in my work.

Martini
Every so often I get the urge to do some boolean operation modeling with Bryce primatives. This martini is one of my favorite boolean models.

April 2001

Cocktail 1
Martini glasses are one of the easiest things to model so I've done a number of versions of them over the years. This is a Carrara version.

May 2001

Broken Window

Still Life 1

This is a Carrara render. I would later import the pen into Bryce.

May 2001

Interior Blue
Still Life 2
I did some post processing in Photoshop to fake a depth of field focal blur.

May 2001
TAntique Fireplace
Still Life 3
Here is the start of a yellow pen to go with the pink highlighter. All of this was created and rendered in Carrara.

May 2001
Four Chairs
Still Life 4
Here is another Carrara render. I added a Castle lock.

May 2001

Egg Timer
I built and rendered this egg timer in Ray Dream (Carrara) and it is still one of my most popular models. I've used it in lots of pictures since then.

May 2001

The Table
I made this table with the metaball legs to stealthily demonstrate the new metaball feature of Bryce 5 when I was still NDAed during the beta testing phase.

May 2001

Mirror Tray
I did the mirror tray for Tony Lynch's mirror/mirror challenge. I modeled and rendered in Ray Dream (Carrara).

June 2001

Interior Blue
Everything in this picture was created in Bryce 5 for the beta testing. The bed was the toughest part, especially the spread which is made of hundreds of metaballs. I learned in the process that metaballs render a few points beyond where their wireframes end. I guess this is part of how their "stickiness" work but it makes working with them difficult when non metaball objects are involved.

July 2001

Cheese and Crackers
The cheese, plate and crackers are all vertex editor creations. They're all low poly and rather crude but represent a huge leap forward for me back in 2001.

October 2001

The Edge of the World as Reflected by a Pitcher
This is an exploration of the "forth wall" in art.

July 2002

Setting up for the Party
I think I was a little lonely while home on maternity leave before Sean's birth.

July 2002

Coffee Service
The coffee urn was one of my most complicated models up to that time in August of 2002.

August 2002

Fisher Island Tea Party
Here is the completed Fisher Island room.

August 2002

Solarium
Ooh. Nekkid men on the walls!

August 2002

Monday
I think I must have rendered this on a Monday.

September 2002

Rancho California
A number of people have told me this render reminds them of a doctor's or dentist's office.

December 2002

Afternoon Champagne
I wanted to see if I could do a champagne bottle in Carrara. This picture is rendered in Bryce.

January 2003

Five to Nine
I was trying to capture the feel of a small mountian cabin.

January 2003

The Sun Room
I chose to sepia tone the interior to bring out the colors of the garden outside.

February 2003

The Chicken Made Me Do It
I was testing out my chicken model.

February 2002

Collection in the Window
Three funky beer glasses rendered in Bryce.

February 2002

The Colonel's Retirment
The chair was new for this project

February 2002

Red and White
The wine spill is done with a metaball grouping.

February 2002

Molly's Cabin
I don't remember why I named this Molly.

March 2003

Barstow
I was mostly playing with previously created items.

March 2003

Spring Break
I turned the Hammershoi model into a cheesy 1960s redecorated motel.

March 2003

The Parlor
These mice are better sized. I think I was mostly reusing objects for this piece.

April 2003

Orange Soda
I had a two liter bottle that was 2/3 empty on my desk. I decided to try creating a model based on it. The spilled glass of soda uses metaballs to create the spill.

May 2003

Running out of Options
Ever felt like a fish out of water?

May 2003

Black and White
I made the table cloth with the vertex editor. It was another huge step forward in my understanding on that piece of Carrara.

May 2003

This American Life
I put this scene together while listening to the NPR radio show of the same name.

May 2003

Coffee
Dedicated to all those people who have to pull late nighters or who work the grave yard shift.

May 2003

A Letter to His Sister
It's a letter from James to Grace but I don't remember what the letter says.

June 2003

A Simplified Version of my Apartment and Desk
Here is a pretty good idea of what our Pacifica apartment looked like (minus the clutter).

July 2003

Lead Me Not into Temptation
I was testing out the new chairs.

October 2003

The Bookie
Doesn't it look like one of those seedy motel rooms that stories usually put the shadiest of bookies?

February 2004

Early Morning Coffee
I created the blue folding chair in Carrara for this piece. The ivy is a Bryce tree with the trunk and branches set to transparent and new branches draw in with Photoshop.

March 2004

Happy New Year
I had planned to call this piece "waiting for New Year's" and you'll notice that the clock hasn't quite hit midnight, but since I created this piece 2 days after the New Year started, it seemed like a silly title. No new models. The shelf on the wall is by Tony Lynch and everything else is mine.

Created January 2, 2005

Green Tea
Another photoshop drawing taken from a pen and ink doodle I did at work.

Created April 21, 2005

Closing Time
The barstools are one of my latest creations. The bar is a simple boolean operation. I probably should have put more detrious on the bar to give it a more realistic end of the night feel but it it was bedtime. Let's just pretend that the place is almost cleaned up for the night.

Created April 28, 2005

Hot Tea
Here we are in the middle of a heat wave and I get the inspired to create a tea pot in Carrara. So it's hot tea, hot weather and hot chilis as a friend of mine put it.

Created July 11, 2005

Just Need a Fork and Knife
While boiling eggs for dinner last night I began to wonder if I could model fried eggs in Carrara. He're my result.

Created July 14, 2005

Lemonade
We've been having an unexpected heatwave. The heat inspired this image. Someone asked me why I put the gloves in the picture. They are there to hint at days when ladies wore white gloves. Of course to make the drinks, she'd have to take them off.

Created September 27, 2005

A Plate of Cookies
Besides cupcakes, Sean also likes to bake chocolate chip cookies. I created these chips in Carrara's vertex editor and then added them to a terrain based cookie in Bryce.

Created December 5, 2005

Flowers for Spring
I created the patterns in Illustrator and made the model in Carrara. These cups are inspired by a pair of cups I saw on Ebay.

Created March 30, 2006

Living Single
I created the olive oil dispenser last night. First I drew the sunflowers on the bottom in Illustrator and then I built the bottle in Carrara. I did the materials and rendering in Bryce. This kitchy scene reminded of the the sort of place I'd probably have if I were single.

Created April 5, 2006

Capp'y Rick Retires
David Cole made the swordfish and I thought it would be fun to hang it on the wall of a really over done interior. Maybe I was tired of doing landscapes!

Created June 2, 2006

The Neon Parrot
I needed to take a break from my personal challenge of using each of David Cole's models in a piece. The "current" one that I've opened is a round house but it doesnt' have the tracks and I'm just not sure I want to make a rail yard piece. I realized that emotionally I was missing the thrill of creating my own model and it had been too long since I had done an interior (a staple of mine).

Created July 9, 2006

Poppy, Acorns and Kettle
I wanted to see how my poppy model would look under a light dome, so I put together this render. I tried to keep most of the materials as simple as possible to put the emphasis on the flower and on the lighting.

Created August 2, 2006

Frosty Margarita
Again I've gone back to older images and I came across my martini images. As I still use the martini model on a regular basis I decided I should do something new but similar.

Created September 2-3, 2006

Lucy's Home
Inspired by The Eye of the Needle (1981).

Created September 22-3, 2006

Hawaiian Pizza
After making a comment about my love of Hawaiian pizza (and never getting to eat it) on LiveJournal, my mother mentioned that she and my brother also love that type of pizza. If I lived closer to them I think we'd plan a Hawaiian pizza night.

Created September 25, 2006

Lemon
I'm having fun with the lighting set up for "Tomato" and decided to try again with my lemon model.

Created October 18, 2006

Limes
When I did "Tomato" I really wasn't looking to start a series but the lighting set up works so well that I've been having fun trying different models with it.

Created October 20, 2006

Flowers
These were supposed to be California poppy blossums but they didn'y turn out quite right.

Created October 24-6, 2006

Siesta
Inspired by the "Light and Airy" challenge on the Bryce group. I like how the trees reflect in the glass.

Created November 12-3, 2006

Zillah
Zillah drank too much gin and is the last child in the series.

Created April 21, 2007

Vodka Tonic
Once again I'm taking my inspiration from a recent painting. I like Jelaine's version better but I enjoyed the challenge of the piece. All the models are my creations as are the materials. I worked especially hard on the materials for the glass, vodka and ice and on the lighting of the scene. The render took 48 hours to complete.

Created September 3-5, 2007

Stacked Cups
I was inspired by Carol Marine's "Stack of Cups" painting. I liked the apparent simpilicity of it. Actual set up wasn't as simple as it first looked like it would be and it took a couple of attempts to get a good render.

Created September 23, 2007

His and Hers
Michael Naples painted the lovely "Morning Coffee" and it made me realize that while I have rendered coffee pots, I haven't rendered an actual cup of poured coffee. I also tried to capture the shadow placement but rather than one cup, I did two. Ian likes black coffee and I like it "au lait" and it seemed like a good challenge to try to do both. Although Ian's cup is actually pitch black, it renders this caramel color. I need to try again in future renders until I can learn the secret behind the perfect digial cup of black coffee.

Created October 22-3, 2007

Coffee and a Cookie
I did this render mostly to work more on getting the perfect shade for black coffee. I like this version better.

Created October 26, 2007

Infinite Coffee
I saw a rant about tea vs. coffee on Noisy Decent Graphics and at the top of the post there is this wonderful photograph of a sea of mugs. I so loved all these dozens of mugs that I decided to take my recently adjusted coffee cup and make my own version of the photograph. Although I am as much a tea addict as Ben is, I ended up doing a render devoted to coffee in honor of Ian who often seems to be capable of drinking infinite coffee.

Created November 9, 2007

David's Kettle
I liked the reflections in "3 Brown Eggs Reflected in Chrome" and went from there. My favorite shinny model is this kettle. I wanted to bring some color in to the piece and the daffodils just seemed like the natural choice.

Buy a copy of "David's Kettle" to hang on your wall.

Created December 4-6, 2007

Black Coffee
I am working on a series of coffee pieces. The final one will draw on "Oranges and Plums" for inspiration.

Buy a copy of "Black Coffee" to hang on your wall.

Created December 13, 2007

White Coffee
"White Coffee" is the second piece in my current coffee series. It's the first white background piece I've done where I'm actually pleased with the results.

Buy a copy of "White Coffee" to hang on your wall.

Created December 14, 2007

Checkered Coffee
I am working on a series of coffee pieces. Checkered Coffee is my newest piece in the coffee series.

Buy a copy of "Checkered Coffee" to hang on your wall.

Created December 17, 2007

Harriet's Chair (Sitting #6)
Still having fun with my sitting series.

Buy a copy of "Harriet's Chair" to hang on your wall.

Created March 14, 2008

Rosie's Chair (Sitting #7)
Still having fun with my sitting series. I liked the way "Harriet's Chair" turned out that I decied to do a blue and red verion based on the color scheme from "Red Sock."

Buy a copy of "Rosie's Chair" to hang on your wall.

Created March 16, 2008

Sherbert Lemon (Sitting #8)

I thought the lemon slice would look nice in a yellow room.
