March 2005
I lost half of February to the flu. Hopefully March will be more productive.

Desert Afternoon (Cardiff)Desert Afternoon
Planet Cardiff has a few dry zones where I've found some cacti varieties. They are altered versions of what comes with the program.

Winter's Coming (Cardiff)Winter's Coming (Cardiff)
A quick view of the ice flows on Cardiff. I also rather like the view of the sky. That was a lucky find.

Amanda's CouchAmanda's Couch
I put this rather simple interior together last night while watching NCIS and the season premiere of The Amazing Race. The scene is inspired by an Artedeco advertisement in an older issue of Florida Design. I reused the couch I built for the interior renders of my own living room but I changed the texture and added some throw pillows. Negative lighting provides the contrast under the stairs.

Amanda's PatioAmanda's Patio
Last night while watching Smallville and later CSI: New York, I built these director's chairs with boolean operations. The canvas bits are terrains. I obviously reused a lot of the elements from the previous project.

172/1 Down the Crevasse 172/1 Down the Crevasse
My first render from Aktati's Planet Spelaean Habitat (challenge 172). She's used the clouds to create the sense of a cave roof.

172/1 The Rope 172/1 The Rope
The second render shows one of the inner rings. It makes a nice looking rope.

172/3 The Way Out?172/3 The Way Out?
At last I've found the stars. I seem to have escaped from Aktati's cave world.

 The City The City
Planet Detroit is a little joke in response to a friend who teased me for naming all my recent planets for British cities.

Light ReadingLight Reading
The amphora lamp is my latest boolean building project. I finally gave in an imported one of my earlier models (the table) to use in this project as the lamp had taken my entire alloted time for playing in Bryce.

At Home in MississaugaAt Home in Mississauga
I was looking at an advertisment for kitchen cabinets when I was inspired to create a dresser. Like my previous projects the dresser uses boolean operations. Mississauga is in Canada (near Ontario) and the kitchen designer is based there. It seemed like a good name for this image even though it shares very little with the ad that inspired it.

Edingburgh CoastEdinburgh Coast
I'm back to naming planets after cities in Great Britain. This time it's Scotland. I'm having some trouble with Edinburgh. I'm not quite satisfied with the landforms and the vegitation colors.

Tumble WeedsTumble Weeds
One happy discovery while working on Edingburgh is the tumble weed MojoTree. It consists of three levels of branches each with a high degree of curve and a high number of segments to create these knots of bushes.

Jordon's RoomJordon's Room
I built the chair with booleans and terrains but I didn't like the initial two renders I did on Wednesday. Last night I opted for moodier lighting and I like the results.

Created March 9-10, 2005

Light Reflecting on SnowLight Reflecting on Snow
This is my first render from Artistken's contribution to the challenge planets (#173). The planet seems to render best at dusk and dawn.

Created March 10-11, 2005

On Location in Big SurOn Location in Big Sur
I made the little folding table to go with the director's chair. The two pieces just called for an outdoor setting. The mountain in the background is the Big Sur DEM that comes with Bryce.

Modern ArtModern Art
I'm trying my best to learn vertex modeling. My stone sculpture is the result of about twenty minutes of just playing with various tools.

Created March 14, 2005

Primary ColorsPrimary Colors
I'm still playing with vertex editing and having fun making all sorts of odd shapes. I thought a bold color scheme would fit these shapes better than earthy tones like I used in the previous image.

The New MoonThe New Moon
This simple drawing started as a doodle. I liked the doodle enough that I recreated it in Photoshop.

Created March 15-6, 2005

Young RedwoodsYoung Redwoods
I'm still playing with vertex editing. This time I managed to create a nice shape that could be used as both a tree limb and as a tree root. Getting the tree editor in Bryce to cough up a halfway convincing redwood ended up being harder than the vertex modeling. I've gotten out of practice with the tree editor.

Lady BugLady Bug
I had some time at work and thought I'd draw a lady bug in honor of my son's current favorite book, Ten Little Lady Bugs.

Created March 18, 2005

Hunting for EggsHunting for Eggs
I had one of those "eureka!" moments with Carra's vertex editor last night and ended up creating a beautifully ornate fence. That fence was the start of this image, though it now is but a dim background detail at the edge of the garden.

Duro TerracesDuro Terraces
Alisonb's planet Duro (challenge 165) is quick to render and has some lovely materials. The green valley below this rocky range is actually the ocean.

Created March 25, 2005

 By JoveBy Jove
Here is a lovely sunset render from planet Duro with a moon resembling Jupiter on the horizon.

Created March 25, 2005

Duro Fly ByDuro Fly By
I did this render of Planet Duro to highlight the beautiful rock formations and the grassy areas. I adjusted the contrast and color balance a bit in Photoshop to bring out the details.

Data EntryData Entry
I started this piece with a doodle on graph paper. I realized that my doodle would tile nicely and I recreated it in Photoshop and defined it as a background. Then I created a new file and laid down the doodle as the background. I filled in some of the boxes with colors but decided that I liked the large amount of white space so I didn't color everything in.
